Kristy’s Tiny Aviary (KTA) strives to provide you with the most healthy, friendly, well adjusted and socialized pet Parrotlets possible. All of our babies are closed banded with bands from the International Parrotlet Society. We take every step to ensure aviary cleanliness, genetic diversity in our breeding program and accurate record keeping. If you are new to owning a Parrotlet, I will schedule a “how to care for your Parrotlet” meeting with you to go over the care you need to provide your new pet bird. I am only interested in people wanting to adopt my babies that can provide the proper care required so that they are happy and healthy for their whole lives. Just because these birds are small, does not mean they do not require a huge commitment from you, the care giver. Each and every baby we raise have numerous hours extended to them in their care and training. Each baby will be starting to learn to step up during the weaning process. This training should be continued once your baby arrives home. KTA believes one of the most important things we can do for our beloved pets, is to provide them with a proper, nutritious diet. Parrotlets may be little, but they have veracious appetites! Take advantage of their appetite while they are young and teach them that there are a variety of foods to be eaten everyday….not just seed. Seed is extremely important in their daily diet, but should not be the majority of what they eat in a day. Seed mixes should be about 45% of what they consume in a day. Parrotlets seem to require more protein and fat than other larger parrots as well. A good quality cockatiel mix that I use on my breeders is from Avian Naturals. It is called the George’s Tiel Mix. I highly recommend this seed mix for your baby. I also use a seed from Volkmann's named Avian Science Super Parrotlet. This too has way more than just seed in it. Some of the ingredients other than seed are bee pollen, flax seed, carrots, green peas, white beans, pink beans, soy nuts, spelt flakes, shredded coconut etc….these are not your average grocery store bird seed mixes! All of my breeders get this as well as the babies during weaning. Another company that makes wonderful foods and treats for small hookbills is Goldenfeast. They sometimes refer to the smaller formulas as “petite” such as their “Petite Hookbill Legume” mix. Higgins make a cookable food named “worldly Cuisines”. I find that my Parrotlets like the Tuscan Dream Flavor. Another line of foods made specifically for small birds is Beak Appetit Veggie Delight. This food is wonderful for the little ones. You just add water to the container the food comes in and cook it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Any left over's are stored in the same container it comes in. Talk about convenience! This food is preservative free, chemical free...and has home cooked goodness and nutrition for your birds, and of course they love it! Every day, we offer a variety of fresh fruits, veggies, leafy greens, beans, sprouts, lentils and grains in addition to their seed mix. We also use a wonderful birdie bread called Tabbi’s Bird Bread. All of my birds devour this birdie bread the second we put it in their cage! We even use this bread if we have a bird who otherwise will not touch fruits and veggies etc at first. Everything we want them to eat—we hide it in their birdie bread! Never fails, they eat this birdie bread spiked with all the foods they wouldn’t eat otherwise. This teaches them all about the different textures of foods, and after eating this irresistible birdie bread with all these veggies and fruit in it, they become more receptive to eating various foods! Later, the raw fresh fruits and veggies that they would not eat prior to my birdie bread trick is added to their diet...and they end up eating them too!
